How do we set up children for lasting school success? A new three-volume encyclopedia from SAGE Publishing covers the study and practice of educating young learners

August 24, 2016

Early educational experiences can shape children’s learning, behavior, and relationship skills. How do parents, schools, and policymakers support and optimize these programs? Out today, The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education explores the issues and concepts surrounding early childhood education from birth through eight years of age.

“In the United States today, awareness of early childhood education as a distinct field of study and teacher preparation is increasing. Yet, traditional boundaries remain a barrier in both professional preparation and school formats,” write the editors Donna Couchenour and J. Kent Chrisman. “This encyclopedia was created with an emphasis on early childhood education as a multidisciplinary field based on theoretical, empirical, and practical evidence.”

Addressing essential components of early childhood education, the text provides a foundation for undergraduate and graduate students of teacher education as well as practicing teachers and other school professionals. The text also serves as a resource for policymakers who are involved in the funding and regulation of education at the federal, state, and local levels.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education contains articles from more than 400 scholars and practitioners across a range of disciplines, such as public administration, urban planning, public health, sociology, history, and political science. Organized into fifteen topics, the text examines child development, early intervention, families, play, curriculum, diversity, and more. In addition, the set contains entries from highly regarded experts in the field, such as Martha Buell, Tracy E. Collins, and James E. Johnson.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education includes a reader’s guide to assist readers in navigating the encyclopedia. A list of entries in alphabetical order, along with cross-references at the end of each entry, is also provided. For more information, click here.
