SAGE Publishing welcomes AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples

August 15, 2017

London, UK. SAGE Publishing today announced that it is to begin publishing AlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples, in association with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM), New Zealand's Māori Centre of Research Excellence.

AlterNative was launched by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga to provide an innovative space for Indigenous scholars to set their own agendas, content and arguments. Today AlterNative is a core source of scholarship by Indigenous peoples and for those working alongside, and with, Indigenous communities. It aims to shed light on Indigenous theory, thinking and practice, making sense out of leading issues, whether they are at local, national or global levels.

Michael Walker, Co-editor of the journal commented:

“Since its inception, AlterNative has created an international Indigenous academic community and has been monumental in generating an understanding of Indigenous academic discourse. Under SAGE Publishing, renowned for publishing social science research and championing its importance, the journal will be able to reach new audiences and have a greater impact worldwide.”

NPM Co-Director Associate Professor Tracey McIntosh agreed, remarking:

“We believe that AlterNative is now uniquely positioned with an independent publisher who will provide world-wide distribution expertise and experience. This publishing partnership offers the journal yet another opportunity to grow and convey inspiring and innovative Indigenous worldviews into new communities and institutions.”

Building bridges between the academic study of Indigenous affairs and the modern world, the journal covers the following themes: transforming places; peoples; communities; cultures; histories and colonialism. Interdisciplinary in focus, the journal publishes scholarship across the Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Health, Business, and Law.

Miranda Nunhofer, Executive Director, Humanities and Social Science Journals, SAGE Publishing, further commented:

“Interdisciplinary research is vital to gaining new, collaborative perspectives on complex areas of research and AlterNative draws on these benefits by publishing across research disciplines and communities. With its rich content, AlterNative is an important vehicle for championing interdisciplinary research, providing a platform, and encouraging engagement with, the perspectives of Indigenous peoples around the world.”
