Child Neglect and Emotional Abuse
Understanding, Assessment and Response

March 2014 | 216 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Protecting children from emotional abuse and neglect is a serious and complex area of social work practice. This book takes readers step-by-step through the underlining theory, skills and practice of working with vulnerable children, highlighting essential contemporary research evidence throughout.

Part 1: Understanding introduces the nature and consequences of child neglect and emotional abuse, including up-to-date knowledge about the physiological impact of childhood malnutrition and emotional deprivation.

Part 2: Assessment considers in detail the factors which can contribute to the complexity of the assessment process and explains assessment procedures.

Part 3: Response offers insights into positive interventions, including some innovative modern therapies and family management approaches such as 'PACT'.

Using a series of case studies to make complex skills and knowledge accessible, this is essential reading for students and professionals across disciplines that may come into contact with vulnerable children.

This is a most welcome edition to the field of child protection and safeguarding. The book covers some of the complex issues involved in ways that are accessible to and facilitative of student learning.

A very useful text, especially when considering the difficulties encountered in classifying many instances of child abuse for legal and recording purposes.

This book can give students a greater understanding of the children and the issues they present with when becoming part of a nurture group. I have recommended it to my students who have found t to be informative and a useful additon to their study materials.

In society today areas of safeguarding and protection are detrimental to a child’s well-being; however with this said the subject of emotional abuse which has a life changing effects can be and sometimes is not given the recognition is clearly deserves. Yet Doyle and Timms have clearly identified and discussed such issues in this book which would raise awareness and give a deeper understanding to the subject , so I am of the opinion this text will be invaluable to any practitioner or student in the field of safeguarding and protection.

This is an excellent text, the impact of Neglect & Emotional abuse on the child is often under estimated and research is currently being undertaken to evidence the long term impact on the child. I therefore believe this is a valuable text to raise awareness and helping professionals work together to improve outcomes for these group of children.

This book is an important text in the exploration of two areas of child abuse that are complex and long-lasting for many children, and challenge many practitioners working in the field of safeguarding children.

Useful resource for those studying child development and assessing a child`s needs

I would recommend this book for both undergraduates and post graduates as a most accessible and informative book to date on this subject area. I particularly like the chapter 2 and 3 as the two assist in understanding and responding and provides the reader with food for thought to dealing with cases in practice.

I feel this book is one of those books that a practitioner will utilise in their every day practice.
