Cultural Studies and Discourse Analysis
A Dialogue on Language and Identity

First Edition

June 2001 | 208 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This novel and important book brings together insights from cultural studies and critical discourse analysis to examine the fruitful links between the two. Cultural Studies and Discourse Analysis shows that critical discourse analysis is able to provide the analytic context, skills and tools by which we can study how language constructs, constitutes and shapes the social world and demonstrates in detail how the methodological approach of critical discourse analysis can enhance cultural studies. In a richly argued discussion, the authors show how marrying the methodology of critical discourse analysis with cultural studies enlarges our understanding of gender and ethnicity.

Intersections

A very nicely written book on the intersections of language and identity. Great overview of concepts, theories, and research approaches. Since most of my students are from Slavic studies, the fact that it discusses fieldwork from Poland makes it even more precious for my teaching.

An interesting and challenging reader - particularly the case studies which verge from the traditional, both in the data used for analysis and in the method applied.

Both practical analyses apply a mix of cultural and discourse methods, but do so as if they were telling a story rather than dissecting it. Particularly interesting is the topics that were chosen. Both address identity, but these identities are often seen as representatives of those holding/abusing power -- men, ethnic majorities, and elderly (in terms of being traditional). I definitely recommend, particularly for students in Poland.
