"No self-respecting qualitative researcher should be without Paul Atkinson's handbook on ethnography. This really is encyclopaedic in concept and scope. Many "big names" in the field have contributed so this has to be the starting point for anyone looking to understand the field in substantive topic, theoretical tradition and methodology."

Ethnography is one of the chief research methods in sociology, anthropology and other cognate disciplines in the social sciences. This Handbook provides an unparalleled, critical guide to its principles and practice.
The volume is organized into three sections. The first systematically locates ethnography firmly in its relevant historical and intellectual contexts. The roots of ethnography are pinpointed and the pattern of its development is demonstrated.
The second section examines the contribution of ethnography to major fields of substantive research. The impact and strengths and weaknesses of ethnographic method are dealt with authoritatively and accessibly.
The third section moves on to examine key debates and issues in ethnography, from the conduct of research through to contemporary arguments.
The result is a landmark work in the field, which draws on the expertise of an internationally renowned group of interdisicplinary scholars. The Handbook of Ethnography provides readers with a one-stop critical guide to the past, present and future of ethnography. It will quickly establish itself as the ethnographer's bible.
An excellent book on ethnographical methods, theory and research. Provides an in-depth exploration of a large range of ethnographical approaches and key themes and is highly recommended to students at all levels who wish to gain an invaluable introduction to Ethnography. Definitely a classic textbook in Ethnography!
This is an excellent book. I would definitely recommend to anyone who is reading at post-graduate level as is it very in-depth and theoretical.
This is an excellent book. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapter on 'Grounded theory in Ethnography'. Highly recommended!
This is an in-depth guide to ethnographic research which includes the underpinning epistemologies and a range of creative research methodologies that incorporate grounded theory and other methods within an ethnographic framework. Examples used are broad ranging and transdisciplinary. One constructive comment: The text is quite small and this may make it less of an attractive option for students with sight problems - is an electronic or larger text version available?
One of the classic textbooks in Ethnography. I would not know how to teach this subject without this volume.
Excellent book for all health professions and for all levels of research students. easy to read and understand
This edited collection is packed with chapters by leading authors and it explores a wide range of ethnographic approaches. It is an excellent resource for students; and for lectures and researchers in the field of social sciences; which I would highly recommend
The Handbook is a solid addition to any collection for students of ethnography. The broad range of articles address many of the key themes, histories and applications of ethnographic practice and highlight why it has remained an enduring tool for qualitative research.
The 'Handbook...' provides excellent coverage of important topics relating to ethnographic research. The contributors include a number of well-respected criminologists and social deviance researchers so this is an excellent resource for students undertaking intermediate level criminological research training.
The range of topics and issues covered in the edited chapters makes this an excellent text book to recommend for students. The fact that it covers both theoretical, methological and practice focused issues makes it especially helpful.
