It can help to quickly build up essential knowledge on ethnography as a discipline and method and guide one towards more specific literature suited to ones research. The chapter on field notes is particularly helpful as it is an often neglected part of the practice of ethnography.

While developing interest among students to research into the practicalities of church and their localities, ethnographic matters are essential to understand. This books sets out and accomplishes a lot of the ground world for what a handbook on ethnography needs to be. It is perhaps a little beyond my BA students and may phase them but it should help those who persist in reading sections of it at least as a reference. The typeset is a little too close and dense for comfort of skim reading! Perhaps it is better for the PhD students!

This is an in-depth guide to ethnographic research which includes the underpinning epistemologies and a range of creative research methodologies that incorporate grounded theory and other methods within an ethnographic framework. Examples used are broad ranging and transdisciplinary. One constructive comment: The text is quite small and this may make it less of an attractive option for students with sight problems - is an electronic or larger text version available?
One of the classic textbooks in Ethnography. I would not know how to teach this subject without this volume.

The contributors include a number of well-respected criminologists and social deviance researchers so this is an excellent resource for students undertaking intermediate level criminological research training.
The range of topics and issues covered in the edited chapters makes this an excellent text book to recommend for students. The fact that it covers both theoretical, methological and practice focused issues makes it especially helpful.
