Good foundation text for students entering into academia who have not got the grounding required for traditional entry to degree programmes in healthcare. very good introductory text for health and social care students. I used with my HNC group and foundation degree group. it is very accessible and a great starting point for less confident learners with links further relevant readings suggested.

This is a sound introductory textbook and can be used by nursing students although it would have to be supplemented by other texts. I wonder why there was no sociology chapter? Chpt 1 was useful, containing lots of easy tips for the learner - would like to have seen more on essay writing. Chpt 2 useful but need more signposting for nurses. Chpt 3 clear introduction to research I would add Alan Brymans research text to the reading list - an easy read. Chpt 4 introduced relevant topics and I liked the section on health inequalities, could the stigma section be developed?

A useful and informative text both at HNC level and in preparation for this level of study. Learning styles will be a useful section early in learners' studies and the section on learning through placement will be recommended in particular.

This book provides a basic information into key issues in health and social care. Some of my students have found it invaluable others have preferred a different text.
