New SAGE Publishing text examines war through the lens of the social sciences

January 18, 2017

SAGE Publishing is pleased to announce the release of the four-volume set, The SAGE Encyclopedia of War: Social Science Perspectives. Unlike traditional war encyclopedias that focus on military science and history, The SAGE Encyclopedia of War: Social Science Perspectives also covers the effect of wars on culture, trade, societies, and more.

“We need an appreciation of the multiple effects of war, not only on soldiers but on civilians, on the environment, and in diffuse but still powerful legacies that become woven into family life, neighborhoods, the civic sphere, and the organization of the economy,” writes Paul Joseph, Editor. “An encyclopedia that deliberately focuses on social science perspectives is well situated to investigate this broader social context of war.”

The SAGE Encyclopedia of War: Social Science Perspectives includes approximately 700 signed entries on concepts and theories of war, how wars are conducted, issues related to reconciliation, and more. The four-volume set also includes an entry on each nation in the world, religions, and battles with significant legacies, from medieval wars to the War in Afghanistan.

Many of the entries are from key academics in an array of fields, such as communication and mass media, economics, political science, sociology, and more. Other contributors include both war critics and those from military backgrounds.

The SAGE Encyclopedia of War: Social Science Perspectives includes a Readers Guide that organizes entries by disciplinary areas and topical themes, and all the entries conclude with cross-references and suggestions for further readings. In addition, the Resource Guide directs readers to books, journals, and electronic resources for in-depth study.
