SAGE reports strong growth in 2014 Citation Reports® (THOMSON REUTERS, 2015)

July 10, 2015

London - SAGE, one of the world’s leading independent academic and professional publishers, today reported strong performance and continued growth across its journals portfolio in the Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) Thomson Reuters, 2015.

With over 500 journals now ranked in the JCR, SAGE continues to experience consistent growth within the reports, achieving a 31% increase over the past five years. In this year’s reports, over 100 SAGE journals have received a top 10 category rank, with 23 journals receiving their first Impact Factor (IF). 220 titles are now placed in the top 30% of the JCR, and 52% of SAGE journals are ranked within the top half of their subject category. In the 2014 reports SAGE publishes the market leading journal within 13 categories including:

  • Science Citation Index (SCI): Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine; History & Philosophy of Science (SCI); Medical Informatics; Rehabilitation (SCI); Robotics; Statistics & Probability
  • Social Science Citation Index (SSCI): Education & Educational Research; Education, Special; History & Philosophy Of Science (SSCI); Psychology, Applied; Psychology, Social; Social Work; Sociology

A 26% increase in coverage in the SSCI over the last five years means that there are now 359 SAGE journals in the SSCI.  53% of the SSCI journals received an increased IF, of which 13 are newly acquired titles ranked in the 2014 reports. 140 journals are now placed in the top 25% of the JCR rankings for their category, an increase of 26 journals from the 2013 reports. Particular highlights are Personality and Social Psychology Review (6.692), Journal of Management (6.071) American Sociological Review (4.390), Review of Educational Research (3.897), Exceptional Children (2.745), Social Studies of Science (2.351) and Trauma, Violence & Abuse (2.676) – all ranked #1 in their category. In addition Family Business Review (5.528), Progress in Human Geography (5.010) and Organizational Research Methods (4.148) achieved notable increases in their respective IF.

Over the last five years, SAGE has seen a 51% increase in the number of titles in the SCI index, primarily due to strategic acquisitions and organic growth across the medical, engineering and technology disciplines, with SAGE now being marked out as one of the top five publishers of medical journals in the world. SAGE continues to significantly grow its coverage within the SCI with 181 journals now ranked and 47 journals in the top 25% of their SCI category. Particular highlights include Statistical Methods in Medical Research (4.472), Journal of Dental Research (4.139), Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair (3.976) and International Journal of Robotics Research (2.540), all being ranked #1 in their categories. Two SAGE neurology journals, Cephalagia and Multiple Sclerosis Journal also received high IFs of 4.891 and 4.822 respectively. Additionally, four of SAGE’s 14 recently-launched Therapeutic Advances journals received their first IF in the 2014 reports; Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology (3.925), Neurological Disorders (3.140), Medical Oncology (2.827) and Respiratory Disease (1.949).

Speaking about the JCR Citation Reports, Ziyad Marar, Global Publishing Director, SAGE remarked:

“Once again we are pleased to see strong performances of our journal portfolio across both the SCI and SSCI categories. While SAGE has long recognized the need to consider other measures of journal quality to create a balanced picture, it is pleasing to see improved JCR Impact Factors across so many of our journals reflecting well on editors, article contributors and  the highly talented editorial teams that support them.”
