James H. Banning
Professor of Education, Colorado State University

Qualitative Data Analysis is an excellent text that deals with not just the practical issues of handling different types of qualitative data but also provides insights into methodological and epistemological assumptions underpinning the methods of analysis in qualitative inquiry. Carol has impressively weaved detailed examples of qualitative data with appropriate research theories, which enables a better understanding of analytical approaches in the research process.
Tejendra Pherali
Senior Lecturer in Education Studies and Sociology, Liverpool John Moores University

I found this book is a reading especially useful for researchers who are starting to study and develop qualitative research. It allows readers to understand the theoretical groundings of qualitative approaches (2) and introduces qualitative analysis software (on this topic further reading is necessary). The organisation of the contents makes it easy to read (Key points, examples, summaries and student exercises). I have recommended the book to my students, as an introductory text to qualitative analysis.

This latest edition is a valuable and timely addition to the wealth of existing literature about research methodologies. It is made up of 6 parts with each beginning with an overview of the topic followed by detailed and relevant information about each sub-topic. It is well written and designed to reach a wider audience. Part 3 consists of the additional material to the first edition. In this part the author refers to newer qualitative approaches which includes among others, ‘poetic inquiry’ and ‘ethnodrama and performative art’. Each part concludes with a reading list not just of the references cited but further reading of the specific areas mentioned. To conclude, this is an excellent book for both new and experienced qualitative research students. The language is accessible and appropriate. Qualitative research is shown to be creative and its findings deep and rich. A must-read!

A good introduction to a range of approaches to qualitative data analysis, covering both traditional and more recent techniques. Each approach is discussed in relation to research philosophy, theory, design and practice. I have recommended the book to my students, as an introductory text to qualitative analysis.

Very good text, that provides a comprehensive introduction to qual. data analysis. Covers a range of both traditional and newer approaches as well as coding and basic NVivo. Written in an accessible format that students should be able to use effectively to learn from. It goes into a lot more detail than many books with 'an introduction' in their title. Highly recommended.
