'Haslam and McGarty go the extra mile in this unique and excellent title, covering both quantitative and qualitative methods. The text does a superb job of justifying the necessity for research methods and statistics, before gradually building to comprehensively cover more complex material. Analyses are dealt with in an easy to comprehend, engaging and lively manner. A must have title for those studying and teaching research methods and statistics.'
'Balanced, engaging, suitable for beginners. This textbook makes research methods interesting and relevant -- a must read for students who are terrified of research.'
Adopted as essential reading suitable for undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers seeking to implement research projects within the domain of the social sciences. The text consists of 15 clearly written and well-structured chapters. The content of the book provides a practical insight into research practice to help develop the readers understanding of the main concepts associated with quantitative and qualitative research: methodology, methods, procedures, process, and the techniques that are used in the field of social science and the salient issues associated with their use.
A very impressive text which addresses the challenging topic of research methods in an approachable way, whilst also containing sufficient detail to accompany a student through undergraduate study. I particularly liked the 'research bite' inserts throughout the text, which include some really contemporary critique, and the 'test yourself' questions at the end of each section.
This is a well-organised book. It is however disproportionately biased toward quantitative approaches, neglecting many important key debates and approaches of the past few decades.
A really good, user friendly text which uses everyday language to help undergraduates and interested level 3's understand research and statistics. It has useful check-lists and revision prompts to help learning
A very engaging text
