SAGE: a unique publisher

At SAGE, we stand above the parapet and are proud to be both a ‘good’ and ‘skilled’ actor in the publishing industry; we have the international reach and global publishing program of a commercial publisher, yet as the world’s largest independent publisher, owned and managed by publishers rather than financial investors, we can provide the care and tailored approach of University Presses.  We are unique in that our founder and majority owner, Sara Miller McCune, has put in place an estate plan that guarantees our independence indefinitely. After the death of Sara, the voting shares of the company will be transferred to a trust, which is prohibited from selling SAGE in the future. The goal is for SAGE to continue in perpetuity as a unique and independent publisher with a very long-term view.

SAGE's publishing philosophy is based on three principles, whether in the Social Sciences, Humanities or our rapidly expanding STEM program:

  • Relationships — We depend upon the experience and expertise of the authors, editors, learned societies, colleagues, and vendors with whom we work.
  • Vision — We focus on anticipating and delivering what our customers want.
  • Excellence — We are committed to quality in all that we publish and in all that we do.
