Working with Bereaved Children and Young People

October 2010 | 168 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This book offers a fresh insight into working practices with children and young people who are experiencing the death of a family member, friend, school peer or in their social network. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, the book's practical skills focus is informed by the latest research findings on children and young people's experience of grief. The wide-ranging content includes:

- a comprehensive review of theoretical approaches to bereavement

- the impact of different types of grief on children

- working with children who have been bereaved in traumatic circumstances, such as through criminal behaviour

- skills development.

The list of resources, case studies and exercises encourage critical engagement with the counselling theory and promote reflexive practice. Trainees in counselling, psychotherapy and social work, as well as teachers and mental health workers, will find this an invaluable resource for working with this vulnerable client group.

"Working with Bereaved children and Young People provides a valuable guide to the complex issues of working therapeutically with this especially vulnerable client group. It acknowledges their wisdom, courage and resilience, and is suffused throughout with Brenda Mallon's own distinctive sensitivity to the experience and needs of bereaved children and young people." - Peter Jenkins, co-author, with Debbie Daniels, of Therapy With Children (Sage, 2010)

Lots of useful ideas for those working with children who may have been bereaved.

An interesting and well written book. however the only criticism I would make is that it is quite brief in content and 'bulked up' by undoubtedly useful lists of organisations.

This book deals sensitively with a difficult topic. It gives the reader an insight into the issues around bereavement and helpful ideas of how to support the individual.

An excellent resource for planning work with breaved children and young people. full of practical ideas for therapeutic games, UK resources, and involving the system around the child. It provides an overview of theories around grief and bereavement rather than adhering to a particulr model, making it a good general text.
